This invigorating concoction combines two of my favorite drinks: iced coffee and the Americano, a classic Italian cocktail made with Campari and sweet vermouth (so named because it was a hit with American expats during Prohibition). I’ve enjoyed this hybrid drink as a pick-me-up during brunch, as a low-alcohol refresher on summer afternoons, and on either end of a big meal. If you don’t have any cold-brew coffee on hand, you can make this drink with an iced Americano (espresso and water).

Preparation

  1. In a mixing glass, combine the Campari, vermouth, and coffee. Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir the drink until cold, about 20 seconds. Strain into an ice-filled highball glass and top with club soda. Stir once or twice, garnish with the orange wheel, and serve.
