The zombie cocktail was invented by Donn Beach in Los Angeles—a tiki drink so strong that drinkers at his Don the Beachcomber restaurant were limited to a maximum of two.

Ingredients

¾ oz. 90-proof rum
1½ oz. golden rum, 86 proof
¾ oz. light rum, 86 proof
¾ oz. pineapple juice
¾ oz. papaya juice
3 tablespoons lime juice
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
3 or 4 ice cubes
Pineapple spear
Maraschino cherry
1 tablespoon 151-proof rum
Superfine sugar

Preparation

  1. Combine all ingredients except the pineapple stick, cherry, rum, and sugar in a cocktail shaker. Shake very thoroughly and strain into a highball glass. Garnish with pineapple stick and cherry. Carefully float the rum on top, and lightly sprinkle with a little sugar.
