11 Recipes to Savor This Weekend

It’s a time of political transition in the U.S., and it feels like maybe, just maybe, daylight is lasting a little longer too. This weekend take some time to relish the moment with the wonderfully rich dishes below. They’ll take you from a Friday night pasta dinner through weekend breakfasts, a dumpling lunch, and a chocolate chip cookie with a little something extra to cap Sunday night.

Manicotti
Kick off the weekend with a cozy pasta dinner. This is no quick dish, but it's so worth the effort. You'll start by making crêpes that get rolled up with a filling of ricotta and Parmesan. Layer the filled crêpes into a baking dish with tomato sauce, slide it in the oven, and enjoy the way it makes your whole house smell amazing.

Spinach and Cheese Slab Biscuits
These spinach and cheese biscuits make an excellent weekend breakfast. Or, if sweeter breakfasts are more your speed, go for their blueberry-ginger counterpart.

Jammy Soft-Boiled Eggs
Slice those spinach and cheese biscuits in half and smash a soft-boiled egg into their pillowy interior. If you're into it, a dash of green hot sauce would be very welcome here.

Qaliyeh-e Khorma (Spicy Sweet-and-Sour Salmon With Dates)
This Persian salmon dish is so many good things at once: spicy, sour, sweet, delicious. Date molasses can be purchased online—it may be labeled silan or date honey.

Potato Tahdig
Serve the salmon with a dish of fluffy basmati rice topped with a layer of crispy, saffron-scented potatoes.

Bittersweet Symphony (Gin and Aperol Cocktail)
Ready for a drink? This Negroni riff has a little more gin (so it's a bit less sweet) and a lemon twist for aroma and brightness. Instead of using bold, bittersweet Campari, the citrusy flavor here comes from softer Aperol. All in all, it's a smooth drink that goes down easy. Looking for a nonalcoholic aperitif instead? Consider this booze-free spritz or any of these nonalcoholic bitter drinks.

Chhena Poda
This Indian cheesecake made with fresh paneer is spiced with cardamom and dotted with cashews and golden raisins. It's flipped out of the pan to reveal a caramelized edge dressed in a glossy syrup. Making the paneer yourself is easy and totally worthwhile.

Citrus-and-Dill Gravlax
Cure salmon at home and give yourself the brunch vibes you've been dreaming about for months. Want some rye bread to go with it? This crusty loaf is a real winner. Or, if you're looking for an excuse to putter in the kitchen, maybe this is the weekend you whip up some fresh bagels, too.

Lamb and Green Squash Dumplings
This weekend, snack time (or lunch time or whenever-is-convenient-for-you time) means dumplings. These are stuffed with ground lamb and shredded zucchini. To cook them, you make a thin batter that helps to steam the dumplings and forms a delightfully lacy, crispy skirt.

Ham Hock and White Bean Stew
This silky ham and bean stew comes with an array of toppings that add crunch (cornichons), tang (honey-mustard sour cream), and deep savory flavor (frizzled shallots). A big pot full means you've set yourself up well for Monday night's dinner, too.

Salty Buckwheat Chocolate Chunk Cookies
End the weekend (and/or start the week) with a batch of chocolate chunk cookies. This version gets a little interest from nutty buckwheat flour, but if you don't have it, whole wheat will work, too.
