Thanks to the boom of specialty coffee roasters in the US, thoughtfully sourced and expertly roasted coffee is widely available in towns and cities all over America. But the best coffee subscriptions give coffee lovers access to high-quality beans whether you have a great roaster nearby or not; they'll deliver those high-quality beans right to your door. An increasing number of coffee subscription services curate beans based on your specific taste preferences, bringing craft coffee to your cup without a trip to the grocery store or a visit to your barista at the local fancy pour-over spot.

So which coffee subscription services are worth your time and which can you skip? We tried a handful of subscription services. Ahead, discover our top picks.

Best coffee subscription overall: Trade Coffee

Trade Coffee Co. Subscription

  • Pricing: From $15.75 per 12-ounce bag
  • Delivery frequency: Every 1, 2, 3, 4, or 6 weeks

Trade provided the best value and quality among the coffee subscripts we tested. It offers coffees from 55 roasters. Like other coffee subscriptions, Trade prompts you to take a short quiz to help determine your preferences. The quiz asks simple questions to determine your preferences, including whether you prefer dark roast, medium roast, or light roast; whether you want ground coffee or whole bean; your brewing method; and how adventurous you want to be with the coffees they pick for you.

You can also customize your delivery frequency, so you never have to worry about running out or having too many bags to drink. Trade also allows you to look ahead at the coffee they have selected for you. From there you can shuffle the order around, swap out coffees and choose something specific from one of their many roaster options. With bags of coffee starting at $15.75, Trade is one of the most affordable coffee subscription services.

Best variety: Bean Box

Bean Box Subscription

  • Pricing: $20 per 12-ounce bag
  • Delivery frequency: Every 1, 2, or 4 weeks

Bean Box stood out because it really allows coffee drinkers to taste a variety of coffees without committing to a full bag. In addition to subscriptions to full-size bags, they offer a Bean Box Coffee Sampler for $24. This comes with four 1.8-ounce miniature bags, allowing you to try multiple specialty coffees each month. When you find new coffees you like, you can order a full 12-ounce bag (or sign up for an ongoing subscription) via the QR code right on the sample bag. If you want to try as many different coffees as possible, Bean Box is a great option.

Best Price: Atlas Coffee Club

Atlas Coffee Club Subscription

  • Pricing: $14 per 12-ounce bag
  • Delivery frequency: Every 2 or 4 weeks

Atlas Coffee Club eschews the standard multi-roaster approach in favor of focusing on the 50+ different countries that grow coffee. They share roasts from coffee powerhouses like Colombia and Guatemala, as well as single-origin coffees from regions more overlooked in the broader coffee landscape like Papua New Guinea and Peru. Each shipment also comes with a postcard from the growing region, and an information card that describes the history and geography of the area. They also provide tasting notes for the coffee they send you. If you enjoy learning about where your coffee comes from, Atlas does a great job of providing great coffee with a bit of education.

Origin Roasted Coffee

  • Pricing: $20 per 10-ounce bag
  • Delivery frequency: Monthly

The landscape of coffee subscription boxes has become so densely populated that it’s incredibly difficult to provide something that is truly unique anymore, but Origin Roasted pulls it off. All the coffee they ship is origin roasted, that is, it’s roasted in the country where it’s grown (throughout Central and South America). That means the beans are never shipped while green and actually get delivered much closer to the time they were harvested. This is a key distinction, since long-stored green beans can lose loads of flavor.

One other thing Origin Roasted does to ensure the best possible beans is to only ship beans that are in season in their country of origin. Different regions have different harvest seasons. Guatemala, for example, has its season primarily during the winter months, Peru during the spring and summer. For you, the coffee drinker, the result is a bright, delicious cup of coffee and access to varietals you may have never heard of, like Colombian pink bourbon. But keeping the whole process so geographically contained also provides income and work opportunities to people in the countries that grow some of the world’s best coffee that they often lose to roasters in the United States.

Mistobox Subscription

  • Pricing: $14.95 per 12-ounce bag
  • Delivery frequency: Every 1, 2, 3, or 4 weeks

Mistobox operates similarly to Trade, starting with a quiz that helps customize the subscription to your taste and allowing you to choose how often you want your coffee delivered and the average price per bag. The selections based on our profile decisions really hit the mark. We were impressed by every coffee they sent, and our absolute favorite coffee from them was the Ethiopia Worka Chelbessa from San Francisco's Sightglass Coffee.

Crema Coffee Subscription

  • Pricing: $22 per 12-ounce bag
  • Delivery frequency: Every 1, 2, or 4 weeks

In the multi-roaster subscription space Crema and Trade are the class of the field as far as we're concerned. Crema has a good mix of big name and independent roasters, and also does the best job of any service at figuring out what you like—even if you don’t know anything about coffee. Their quiz helps you hone in on flavors and foods you know and set you up with a coffee equivalent. They also tailor future choices based on your previous reviews in a really effective way. They also offer a workplace subscription that is geared toward providing a larger volume of coffee that can be customized to the tastes of everyone in the office though.

Go Get ’Em Tiger Subscription

  • Pricing: $24 for a 12-ounce bag
  • Delivery frequency: Every 2, 3, or 4 weeks

Single-roaster coffee subscriptions are increasingly popular and the rest of this list represents what we think are the best coffee and best value in the category. These subscriptions are available directly from a single coffee roastery instead of being sourced by a third-party service. We tried the Los Angeles-based Go Get ’Em Tiger coffee club subscription service and were impressed with the quality of the coffee and the consistency of delivery.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Stumptown Coffee Roasters Subscription

  • Pricing: $16 for a 12-ounce bag
  • Delivery frequency: Every 1, 2, 3, or 4 weeks

As one of the older third wave coffee roasters out there (it was founded in 1999), Stumptown has a lot of different coffees to choose from, so they help you find your perfect coffee match with a par-for-course quiz and discover coffee tailored to your preference. In our experience, Stumptown is consistently good and, notably, is one of the most competitively priced options out there.

Blue Bottle Coffee Subscription

  • Pricing: $13 per 6-ounce bag
  • Delivery frequency: Every 1, 2, 3, or 4 weeks

Their small-batch roasted coffee is highly curated—their tasters sample more than 1,000 coffees yearly and narrow down their offer to 70. Each of those 70 picks is tasted at least 50 times to ensure that quality is consistent from batch to batch and it showed in the deliveries we got from them. Subscription options include a single-origin assortment, a blend assortment, a cold brew assortment, decaf selections, and craft instant espresso. Outside of their subscription service, you can also purchase “exceedingly rare” beans, which come in exceedingly small batches from whatever region Blue Bottle can source them from at the time.

Counter Culture Coffee Subscription

  • Pricing: $18 per 12-ounce bag
  • Delivery frequency: Every 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 or 8 weeks

Rounding out our list of the best coffee subscriptions is Counter Culture. This is another good choice for consistent, quality coffee at fairly affordable prices. This brand is committed to providing ethically sourced, quality-focused, Fair Trade-certified beans—and they issue an annual transparency report that breaks down their sustainability efforts.

How did we determine the best coffee subscription services?

Taste in coffee is, of course, subjective. Our preferred flavor profiles and roast levels may not make your favorite cup of coffee. To account for this, we tried to focus first and foremost on objective factors when assessing each subscription service. We looked for the ability to customize your subscription to your taste, and noted the variety of coffee available. We also looked at how much each subscription service cost, along with how reliable the shipping was.

Of course, we tasted plenty of coffee too. We tried most of the coffees brewed with standard home equipment in a variety of ways. Dylan, for example, ground everything fresh using a Baratza Virtuoso grinder and then brewed using a standard French press, Hario V60 pour-over, and a Kitchenaid cold brew maker. In addition to cold brew and pour-over, Noah also used a Diletta Mio espresso machine. We wanted to make sure that whatever your coffee brewing preference, the coffee would be to your liking.
