Ultimate Steak Sandwich

It takes only a few minutes to make this out-of-this-world steak sandwich. Smoked paprika is what adds the “ultimate” to this dish.

Recipe information

  • Yield

serves 4, 1 sandwich per serving

Ingredients

1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/4 teaspoon pepper
4 cube steaks (about 4 ounces each), all visible fat discarded
2 teaspoons olive oil
2 cups frozen bell pepper and onion blend, or 1 cup chopped green bell pepper and 1 cup chopped onion
2 1/2 to 3 ounces presliced fresh button mushrooms (about 1 cup)
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce (lowest sodium available)
4 whole-grain hamburger buns (lowest sodium available)
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish sauce (not prepared horseradish)

Preparation

  1. Step 1

Sprinkle the smoked paprika and pepper over both sides of the cube steaks.

    Step 2

In a large nonstick skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat, swirling to coat the bottom. Add the steaks and cook for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, or until browned. Transfer the steaks to a large plate. Cover with aluminum foil to keep warm.

    Step 3

In the same skillet, stir together the pepper and onion blend, mushrooms, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook, still over medium-high heat, for 3 to 5 minutes, or until tender, stirring frequently.

    Step 4

To assemble the sandwiches, place one bun bottom on each plate. Spread each bun bottom with the horseradish sauce. Top with the steaks and bell pepper mixture. Place the remaining bun pieces on top.

  2. Cook’s Tip Smoked Paprika

    Step 5

Made from ground smoked sweet peppers, smoked paprika adds a wonderful wood-smoked flavor to food. Try sprinkling the paprika on soups, salads, and fish for a new flavor sensation. It’s a handy no-sodium enhancer and definitely one spice worth adding to your collection.

  3. Cook’s Tip on Horseradish Sauce

    Step 6

Horseradish sauce combines a mayonnaise-like base with ground fresh horseradish. Check the condiment section of the supermarket for bottles of this creamy hot and tangy sauce.
