Pervaiz Shallwani
Associate Director, Global Foodways
Pervaiz is an award-winning journalist and a classically trained chef who directs dining and food culture coverage at Bon Appétit and Epicurious.
Pervaiz has worked across print, digital, TV, and video for more than 25 years, focussed primarily on food and law enforcement beats. Occasionally, the two have crossed paths. He is endlessly curious about the intersection of food and culture and has a deep love for asking questions, smart reporting, and storytelling.
Pervaiz most recently worked as a senior editor of investigations and enterprise at CNN. He has worked at The Daily Beast, The Wall Street Journal, Newsday, Time Out New York, and The Morning Call in Allentown, PA. His TV show “Feed Me” won two New York Emmys and an IACP award, and he co-hosted the second season of the “NY CHOW Report,” which aired weekly on NY1 in New York City.
On the side, Pervaiz runs a hot dog pop-up called Chaat Dog. The concept is part of a larger project he has dubbed “Stinky Lunch Kids Strike Back: The Story of American Food.” He also teaches journalism ethics and history at The New School and is a member of the James Beard Broadcast Awards Committee.
Born in Toronto and raised in Chicago, Pervaiz comes from a Pakistani family that takes pride in its cooking. He promises to eat anything (edible) at least once. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two kids. They indulge his cooking endeavors, eating excursions, and burgeoning cookbook collection. pervaizshallwani.com
