Olde Union House

Restaurant

Established in 1791, the now-shuttered Olde Union House in Red Bank, New Jersey, has a storied history. The site of the former dining room was originally a farmers market, a stone’s throw from a steamboat landing site on Warf Avenue. In the 1800s, the hotel was a popular stopping place for farmers taking their produce to the harbor to be shipped to New York. With the rise of passenger lines, the hotel proved equally popular with beach-goers making their way from New York to the Jersey Shore as late as the 1930s. It also hosted traveling entertainers scheduled to perform at nearby venues.

The hotel was remodeled in the spring of 1953 and again in July 1964 in preparation for a gala Fourth of July celebration. Tragically, a fire gutted all but the saloon on July 3 of that same year. Not to be deterred, the restored establishment reopened its doors in October 1964. The restaurant at the Olde Union House was a popular wedding venue, having hosted an uncountable number of rehearsal dinners, as well as many other special occasion meals. To the community’s dismay, it was torn down in 2004. Today, the site of the Olde Union House is a boutique condominium with historic charm and views of the Navesink River from all units.
